At 18 months old, Ellie was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (spastic diplegia). Her parents have been very proactive in doing everything they can for her. They have flown all over the country visiting doctors and specialists and recently moved to Cincinnati to be closer to the Children’s Hospital. Last summer they began bringing now seven-year-old Ellie to the Conductive Learning Center of Greater Cincinnati and immediately after visiting, knew it was a great fit! Her mom said she, “could feel it in my gut”. At that time, Ellie had just come out of a spinal surgery and was in need of some intense physical therapy. Intense therapy and strengthening are critical for patients like Ellie, and her parents knew that the only place Ellie could receive the care she needed was at the CLCGC.

About a week into summer camp, Ellie’s mom and dad saw numerous positive changes in Ellie. At first, it was in her behavior, and for the first time ever, she was actually exhausting herself. Sitting in her wheelchair and doing outpatient therapy for an hour a week was not enough! Going to CLCGC every day gave her structure, a feeling of independence, and most importantly, a workout. Her mood at home has drastically changed and she now sleeps much better at night!

In addition to behavioral improvements, her family has seen so many physical changes in Ellie. She started crawling properly for the first time, has regained her strength back since surgery, and can confidently navigate moving around using a walker for assistance. Ellie’s parents saw so many amazing changes in Ellie in her first weeks that now she goes to CLCGC 5 days a week and homeschool in the evenings. Her mom said,

The conductors are fantastic and really help you make some hard decisions”.

Thanks to Conductive Learning Center of Greater Cincinnati, students like Ellie can now lift their heads, bear weight on their feet, stand independently and even walk with assistance. They not only help provide equipment that allows our students to reach their full potential and become independent but they also help us ensure we have the best staff possible that cares and supports our students and families.
